A book proposal is a statement or documented
plan to write a book by an author.  The proposal is
submitted to a publishing company with the purpose that the
publishing company will accept the proposal.  If the
proposal is accepted, the company will take the risk/reward of
publishing/marketing the book with its resources, and will take
on the task of developing/distributing the book with the
author’s creative genius powering the project.

Creating a successful book proposal is not an
easy task.  Most authors are rejected by publishing
companies because their proposal is not well written, or they
do not come across as qualified enough to write on the subject,
when they very well may be, but just could not write a decent
enough proposal to get a publishing deal.  That is why the
proposal may be the most important part of the author’s
creative process, more important than even the quality of the
book itself. 

The author should understand and be very
familiar with the target market of the book.  The author
should demonstrate his/her knowledge of the target market by
describing their estimated numbers, interests, preferences, age
groups, and as much information as the author can muster on the
audience.  This information is valuable to the publisher
who can determine whether that target audience is large enough
for the book’s topic to get the kind of sales figures that they
are looking for. The publisher can also determine whether that
audience in the past has bought similar topics.

The author should spend most of the proposal
selling his/her qualifications for writing the book.  It
is extremely important that the author presents his/herself as
being one of the leading experts in their subject field, even
if he/she is not the leading expert.  It is this type of
confidence that will be attractive to the publisher. 

Show every professional qualification, any
experience with the subject.  The author should boast and
brag and truly sell themselves to guarantee their
acceptance.

The author should also demonstrate the USP,
or unique selling point.  This is the difference between
that book and other similar books of the same topic.  The
difference is what will allow the author’s book to stand out
and be a required purchase.  The audience should find
material in the book that can be found nowhere else, or at
least material that is not easy to come by. 

If an author follows these basic guidelines
when writing a book proposal, he/she will see dramatically
different responses from publishers than the author who does
not prepare for their book proposal.

The book publishing process has many steps
and is multifaceted.  Many people are involved in the full
publishing process.   The purpose of the book
publishing process is to make the material available for the
public to read.  There are cases where the authors publish
their own books.  This is called self publishing. 
Publishing includes each stage of book development, acquiring
property rights over the book, marketing the book, producing
the physical book, and distributing the book. 

The process normally starts off by buying
intellectual property rights from an author.  The
publishing company spends much of its time looking for material
that it believes will sell.  The author then has to
negotiate some kind of agreement to allow the publisher to
utilize his/her material.  This process takes years
sometimes, due to lengthy negotiations and the lengthy process
of planning a book.   The author must go through a
proposal process where he/she normally hires an agent to
represent them in front of the publisher.  The author also
submits a formal proposal that contains all of the information
on the book.

Once the work is accepted and negotiated, the
editorial stage is entered.  In this stage the book is
read by a number of editors.  Depending on the size of the
company the book may be read by as many as five levels of
editors.  These editors often change the material, request
additional material, change grammar and spelling mistakes, and
work with the author to create more of a sellable book for the
public’s consumption.  The executive editor will make the
final choices as to what content is allowed in the book and
what is left out.  This process can take years, as the
book is normally worked on after the intellectual property
rights have been negotiated.  The editing process can
still occur after the book has been published with new editions
being released.

Finally the book is published and
distributed.  Materials such as paper, ink, and a custom
cover are gathered and brought to an onsite facility or an
offsite facility to print massive quantities of the book. 
The book is normally wrapped in plastic and loaded onto trucks
where it is taken across the nation to the various bookstores
that have negotiated with that particular company to display
their books for sale.  This process requires a large
amount of money in the creation of the product as well as the
distribution.  Often times book stores will pay upfront
for the books, or request a portion of the books sales per each
sale.

Electronic book publishers are companies that
publish books electronically.  In the digital millennium,

writing, copywriting, illustrating, and other similar editing

There are a number of problems which may
arise from electronic books publishing.  Firstly, most of
the sales of books are still offline.  That means that
most people are still not accustomed or comfortable with the
idea of buying books and reading them on their computer. 
There will always be a segment of the population that prefers
to have physical books instead of digital books.

Also, copyright infringement is rampant on
the internet.  Almost immediately after a new book is
released, copyright infringement goes on a rampage and there
are often many versions leaked all over the net. 
Enforcing and policing these illegal versions is nearly
impossible, and there is certainly going to be lost profits
from these enterprises.
